Ferdinand EducationGhana | June 23 |  Over 200 Newly Posted Teachers in Bono East Cry Out After 10 Months Without Salary

Over 200 newly posted teachers in Ghana’s Bono East Region have gone 10 months without pay. They are demanding staff IDs and salary arrears as frustration mounts.

“We Teach, But We Starve”: Bono East Teachers Raise Alarm Over Salary Delays

Over 200 newly posted teachers in the Bono East Region of Ghana have made a passionate appeal to the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service (GES), and Teacher Unions after going nearly a full academic year without receiving salaries.

The group, who officially reported to their various basic schools in July 2024 after receiving full financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance, say they have not received their Staff ID numbers — a critical step in the salary processing chain.

“We teach tirelessly and perform all our duties like any other teacher, yet we’ve not been paid a single cedi,” the affected teachers lamented in a heartfelt letter.

Disparity in Treatment: “Why Are Others Paid and We Are Not?”

While their colleagues from the same graduating year and with identical postings and clearances in other regions have been paid, those in Bono East remain in limbo.

“It is deeply disheartening to be told that our clearance has expired when our batchmates in other regions are getting paid,” the teachers said.

They describe the claim as “false and unfair”, insisting that the clearances were issued together and must apply equally across regions.

Mounting Hardships and Desperation

With no income for 10 months, many of the affected teachers report inability to pay rent, afford transportation, or meet basic living needs.

“We trusted the system, but we feel forgotten,” one teacher said. “We are drowning in debt, living hand-to-mouth, yet expected to inspire our students daily.”

Despite multiple document submissions, repeated visits to district offices, and months of patience, they have seen no results.

Peaceful Protest Scheduled for June 23, 2025

The distressed educators have announced a peaceful picketing at the GES Headquarters, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Finance in Accra on Monday, 23rd June 2025, to draw national attention to their plight.

“This is not an act of rebellion but a cry for justice. We want what we’ve worked hard for,” they said.

Their Demands

The teachers are calling on the authorities to:

  1. Immediately process and issue Staff ID numbers to all affected teachers.

  2. Pay all 10 months of outstanding salaries and arrears.

  3. Dispel and correct the false claim that their financial clearance has expired.

They are also appealing to all major stakeholders including:

  • Ministry of Education

  • Ghana Education Service (GES)

  • Teacher Unions (NAGRAT, GNAT, CCT-GH)

  • Ghana National Association of Newly Trained Teachers (GANNT)

  • Civil society and media houses
