In one of the most captivating Quarter-final contests of the 2024 National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ), Mfantsipim School clinched a Semi-final spot after a nerve-racking tiebreaker against Prempeh College. The clash, which also featured Swedru Secondary School, lived up to its billing, with all three schools fiercely competing for academic glory at the SGS Auditorium.
The contest kicked off with intense competition in Round One. Mfantsipim School and Prempeh College were neck and neck, scoring 29 and 30 points, respectively, while Swedru Secondary School lagged behind with 13 points. Despite the early setback, Swedru’s supporters remained hopeful, cheering their team on for a potential rally in the subsequent rounds.
The second round, known as the ‘Prudential Life Insurance Speed Race,’ tested the teams’ speed and accuracy under pressure. Mfantsipim School took the lead, adding nine points to reach a total of 38, while Prempeh College increased their tally to 35 points. Unfortunately, Swedru Secondary School remained silent, unable to make significant headway.
Round Three, the ‘Problem of the Day,’ posed a challenging biology question on the genetic code, which proved difficult for all the schools. Mfantsipim School managed to secure two additional points, bringing their total to 40, while Prempeh College and Swedru Secondary School earned just one point each.
The tension in the auditorium reached new heights in Round Four, the ‘Jupay Money Transfer True/False’ section, with all three teams answering confidently. Mfantsipim School and Prempeh College continued their tight race, scoring 10 points each, while Swedru Secondary School added to their tally, bringing their score to 24.
The final round, known as the ‘GOIL Riddle Bonanza,’ saw Mfantsipim School draw first blood by answering the opening riddle correctly. Prempeh College stumbled on the second riddle, allowing Swedru Secondary School to score a point. However, Prempeh quickly recovered, answering the third and fourth riddles accurately. This brought both Prempeh College and Mfantsipim School to a tie at 53 points, setting the stage for a dramatic tiebreaker.
In a sudden-death face-off, Mfantsipim School confidently answered the first question, securing a thrilling victory with 56 points and booking their place in the Semi-finals. Prempeh College followed closely with 53 points, while Swedru Secondary School ended their journey in the competition with 24 points.
The 2024 NSMQ Quarter-final clash between Mfantsipim School, Prempeh College, and Swedru Secondary School will go down as one of the most competitive and memorable contests in the history of the quiz. Mfantsipim School’s victory not only demonstrated their resilience and academic prowess but also solidified their reputation as a formidable contender in the prestigious competition.
