Ferdinand | EducationGhana | April 30|Mahama Administration Moves to Clear £39m Scholarship Debt at Brunel University
President Mahama’s government initiates payment of £39 million scholarship debt at Brunel University to support Ghanaian students and restore trust in state-sponsored education abroad.
In a decisive move to resolve the £39 million legacy debt owed to various institutions abroad, President John Dramani Mahama’s administration has initiated steps to settle arrears inherited from the previous government. As part of this effort, the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, under the current leadership, visited Brunel University London to engage directly with the university’s top officials.
During a constructive meeting with Deputy Vice-Chancellor Jonathan Wastling and other senior university executives, both parties agreed to conduct a thorough audit and verification of student records and financial claims. This process is aimed at promoting transparency and ensuring the responsible management of public resources.
Additionally, a phased and practical payment plan is being put in place to reduce the strain on Ghanaian students affected by the debt crisis. Many of these students have faced educational setbacks abroad due to unpaid fees—challenges that were not of their own making.
This intervention reflects President Mahama’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that no qualified Ghanaian student supported by the Scholarship Secretariat is denied the chance to complete their studies. The administration is working tirelessly to restore confidence and credibility in Ghana’s scholarship programs across foreign institutions.
