NAGRAT Elects New National Leadership in Sunyani
The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has elected Jacob Anaba as its new National Chairman, marking a significant leadership transition within one of Ghana’s major teacher unions.
The election took place in Sunyani during the association’s 14th National Delegates Conference, where delegates gathered from across the country to review policy, elect officers, and outline priorities for the next four years.
Mr. Anaba, who previously served as Vice Chairman, contested the chairmanship position unopposed. His elevation follows the completion of two successful terms by outgoing Chairman Angel Carbonu, who has been a prominent voice on teacher welfare and educational policy over the past eight years.
Conference Focuses on Teacher Safety and Discipline
This year’s conference was held on the theme “Ensuring teacher safety through effective discipline in Ghanaian schools: the role of stakeholders.” The theme highlighted rising concerns about teacher protection, student conduct, and the responsibilities of institutions in safeguarding the teaching and learning environment. Delegates discussed issues such as:
- Teacher welfare and professional autonomy
- Safety in boarding and day schools
- Strengthening disciplinary structures
- Collaboration between unions, parents, and the Ghana Education Service
The conversations set a forward-looking tone for the new leadership’s mandate.
Other National Officers Elected
Several national executives were elected or retained to serve a four-year term:
- Rebecca Ocran Abaidoo (formerly Gender Coordinator) — elected Vice Chairperson, unopposed
- Michael Ayuraboya — retained as General Secretary
- Namawu Adam — elected Organising Secretary
- Eric Owusu — elected Financial Secretary
- Linda Ama Boadiwaa — retained as Gender Coordinator
The composition of the new leadership reflects continuity, gender representation, and a balanced blend of experienced officers and new entrants.
