The Government of Ghana has praised the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research for its national and global contributions and announced new investments in diagnostics, training and research infrastructure during the 2025 Annual Research Meeting.

Government Commends Noguchi’s National Role

The Government of Ghana has paid tribute to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research for its sustained contributions to health research, disease surveillance and scientific innovation. The commendation was delivered by the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, at the 2025 Annual Research Meeting, held as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the College of Health Sciences.The Minister noted that Noguchi’s work continues to guide national policy, improve disease monitoring and support public health decision-making. He highlighted the Institute’s leadership during the COVID-19 response and its efforts in tracking mpox, dengue and other infectious diseases.

New Government Commitments to Strengthen Research Capacity

The Minister announced new government support aimed at equipping the Institute for future public health challenges. He disclosed that President Mahama has approved the procurement of an advanced DNA diagnostics machine to strengthen high-precision testing and pathogen detection.He added that research data from Noguchi will remain central to national efforts toward Universal Health Coverage. The Government plans to expand investments in career development, training and technical partnerships through collaborations with Japan International Cooperation Agency and the World Health Organisation.Additional support will be directed toward research on traditional medicine, vaccine development and emerging health threats. Plans for upgrading laboratories and research facilities were also outlined.

College of Health Sciences Marks Its Silver Jubilee

Prof. Alfred Edwin Yawson, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, chaired the opening session and described the meeting as a milestone event that reflects twenty-five years of scholarly achievement. He noted that Noguchi stands at the core of the College’s scientific community and continues to influence biomedical research across the continent.He praised the Institute for its support to the University and local communities, pointing to its contributions in diagnostics, laboratory training and international collaborations.

Noguchi Highlights Global Recognition and New Academic Programmes

The Director of NMIMR, Prof. Dorothy Yeboah-Manu, welcomed participants and emphasised the value of strong partnerships between researchers, policymakers and communities. She acknowledged the challenges researchers face, particularly procurement delays, and called for support that matches the Institute’s national responsibilities.She cited recent international recognitions, including awards received by Prof. Daniel Boakye and Prof. George Armah, as evidence of the Institute’s global standing.Prof. Yeboah-Manu announced that Noguchi has received approval to run its own MPhil and PhD programmes from January 2026. She added that the Institute has maintained its ISO certification and continues to pursue excellence in infectious disease research.

International Partners Reaffirm Long-Standing Commitment

The Ambassador of Japan to Ghana, H.E. Hiroshi Yoshimoto, pledged continued support through technical assistance and research partnerships. He reflected on the legacy of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi and reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to the Institute’s long-term development.The WHO Country Representative, Dr. Fiona Braka, commended Noguchi for its role in global public health, including its participation in vaccine trials and support for routine immunisation programmes in Ghana.

Keynote Address Raises Alarm on Antimicrobial Resistance

The keynote address, delivered by Prof. Beverly Egyir of the Bacteriology Department, focused on the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance. She explained how resistant pathogens undermine medical treatment and called for coordinated national action, stronger surveillance systems and responsible use of antimicrobials.

ARM 2025 Strengthens Collaboration and Investment

The 2025 Annual Research Meeting served as a platform for celebrating achievements while deepening national and international partnerships. Government representatives, academics, development partners and researchers underscored the need for sustained investment in infrastructure and human capital.The meeting closed with a shared commitment to maintain Noguchi as a leading centre of excellence in biomedical research and a vital pillar in Ghana’s health system.
