Ferdinand | EducationGhana | January 24 | Gov’t, Google Partner to Introduce Local Language AI Solutions in Education Sector
Ghana is set to deploy artificial intelligence tools in local languages following a new partnership between the Government of Ghana and Google, aimed at expanding access to quality education, especially in rural communities and among persons with disabilities.
Ghana to Deploy AI Tools in Indigenous Languages
The Government of Ghana has announced a strategic partnership with global technology firm Google to introduce artificial intelligence solutions in local Ghanaian languages as part of reforms to modernise the education sector.
The initiative is expected to improve access to quality education, particularly for learners in rural and underserved communities, as well as persons living with disabilities.
Announcement at UK Generative AI Summit
The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, disclosed the development at the ongoing Generative AI Summit in the United Kingdom.
He revealed that the partnership emerged from high-level engagements with Google’s Vice President on how artificial intelligence can be leveraged to strengthen education delivery in Ghana and across Africa.
According to the Minister, the discussions focused on practical ways technology can address long-standing access and inclusion gaps within education systems on the continent.
Focus on Twi, Ewe, Dagbani, and Beyond
Under the collaboration, Google is working with the University of Ghana and the GDI Hub to develop speech recognition systems and AI-powered learning tools in Ghanaian languages, including Twi, Ewe, and Dagbani.
The project places special emphasis on non-standard speech patterns, an approach intended to improve accessibility in classrooms, digital learning platforms, and public education services.
Call for Inclusion of Hausa Language
The Education Minister further called for the inclusion of Hausa in the programme, describing it as one of the most widely spoken languages in Ghana and across West Africa.
He noted that incorporating Hausa would strengthen regional inclusivity and ensure that the benefits of AI-driven education extend beyond linguistic and geographic boundaries.

Zero-Rated AI Tools for Schools
Google has assured the Ministry of Education that its AI-powered education tools will be deployed in Ghana on a zero-rated basis, reducing cost barriers for institutions and learners.
The tools are expected to include curriculum-aligned digital learning content, alongside resources designed to promote the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning.
Expanding Access for Rural Learners and Persons with Disabilities
According to the Minister, deploying AI solutions in indigenous languages will enable learners in rural areas and persons with disabilities to better engage with educational content and digital platforms.
He stressed that language should not be a barrier to learning in a country with rich linguistic diversity.
Ghana’s Role in Africa’s AI Transformation
“Ghana is not just participating in the AI revolution; we are helping to shape it for Africa,” Mr. Iddrisu stated, highlighting the country’s growing influence in the continent’s digital transformation agenda.
The initiative forms part of Google’s broader US$1 billion commitment to Africa’s digital development, with Ghana positioned as a key hub for advancing inclusive, locally relevant, and innovative AI solutions.
