The Government of Ghana has disbursed GHS 186 million through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to finance student feeding under the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) Programme for the month of June 2025.The announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, during the 63rd Annual Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) held in Sunyani, the Bono Regional Capital, on October 8, 2025.Representing President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister emphasized that the release of funds demonstrates the government’s ongoing commitment to ensuring sustainable and equitable access to quality secondary education in Ghana.Government Reinforces Its Commitment to Free SHS
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu noted that the prompt release of the feeding grants was crucial to addressing operational challenges that schools have faced in recent months, particularly regarding the provision of nutritious meals for students across the country.“The government of President John Dramani Mahama remains steadfast in its commitment to the Free SHS policy,” the Minister said. “The release of GHS 186 million through GETFund is a timely intervention to ensure that no school experiences feeding disruptions, and that every Ghanaian child continues to benefit from equitable education.”He further stated that the funding aligns with broader government efforts to stabilize education financing, improve school administration efficiency, and sustain student welfare programmes nationwide.CHASS Commends the Intervention
The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), which had recently expressed concern over delayed feeding grants, welcomed the payment with relief. Many school heads had indicated that delayed releases were affecting operations, with some institutions struggling to sustain meal services amid rising food prices and supply shortages.A regional CHASS chairperson described the announcement as “a major relief for school administrators who have had to stretch their budgets for months.”He added that the disbursement was not only a financial intervention but also a show of confidence in the leadership and accountability structures of Ghana’s secondary education system.Sustaining the Free SHS Programme
Since its inception in 2017, the Free Senior High School Programme has been one of Ghana’s most transformative social policies, providing millions of students with access to secondary education. However, the programme’s financial sustainability has been a recurring topic of national discussion. The release of GHS 186 million demonstrates the Mahama administration’s commitment to sustaining and improving the policy, ensuring that beneficiaries continue to receive essential academic and welfare support.Education policy analyst Ferdinand Ellis, writing for EducationGhana.org, described the funding as “a vital measure that not only stabilises school operations but also rebuilds public confidence in the Free SHS initiative.”He added that consistent funding for feeding and academic resources “will go a long way in ensuring that the gains of the Free SHS policy are not eroded by logistical or fiscal setbacks.”Looking Forward
The Ministry of Education has assured stakeholders that measures are being taken to institutionalize timely and transparent fund disbursements under GETFund and other supporting mechanisms. The Education Minister urged CHASS and regional directors to ensure efficient use of the released funds, while reaffirming the government’s vision to maintain comprehensive, equitable, and sustainable secondary education across Ghana.Related Links
