The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called on teachers nationwide to immediately verify their GESOPS Tier 2 pension contributions, following important changes in the administration of the pension scheme. The announcement was made during the 2026 National Delegates Conference, as part of resolutions aimed at strengthening transparency and protecting teachers’ retirement benefits.

Why Teachers Must Check Their Tier 2 Contributions

GNAT leadership disclosed that Glico is no longer managing the Tier 2 component of the GES Occupational Pension Scheme (GESOPS). As a result, teachers have been encouraged to independently confirm that their pension deductions are correctly captured and credited. Teachers can now check their contribution records by dialing the short code *733#, a move intended to empower members with direct access to their pension information.

Protecting Retirement Benefits

Union officials stressed that pension deductions form a critical part of teachers’ long-term financial security. Any gaps or discrepancies left uncorrected could negatively affect retirement payouts. GNAT therefore urged members to take the verification exercise seriously and report inconsistencies through their district or regional union offices for prompt follow-up.

Pension Transparency as a Union Priority

Delegates at the conference noted that pension-related concerns have been a recurring issue among teachers, particularly regarding fund management transitions and record accuracy. The verification directive forms part of GNAT’s broader agenda to ensure accountability in pension administration and safeguard members’ post-service livelihoods.

Education sector analysts say the move could help restore confidence in pension management if followed by consistent institutional oversight.
