“Teachers express outrage as the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) deducts double dues from February 2024 salaries. Read more to uncover the controversy.”

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is facing intense scrutiny and backlash from its members following revelations of double dues deductions from teachers’ February 2024 salaries. A confidential E-payslip obtained by CoverGhana exposes this unjustifiable act, sparking outrage among educators across the nation.

Double Dues Deduction:

Upon the release of the February 2024 E-payslips by the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD), teachers were alarmed to discover that GNAT had deducted dues for both January and February 2024. The E-payslip revealed a deduction of GH¢58.44 for February and an additional GH¢53.57 for January, incorrectly labelled as arrears.

Technical Explanation:

GNAT attributed this error to a technical glitch at the Controller and Accountant General’s Department in January, resulting in an erroneous dues deduction of only GH¢4.87 instead of the full amount. Consequently, the association rectified the anomaly by deducting GH¢53.57 for January 2024 from teachers’ February salaries.

Members’ Complaints:

Despite GNAT’s explanation, several teachers reported that the full dues amount was deducted from their January salaries and then again in February, causing financial strain and frustration. Furthermore, some members expressed dismay over an unauthorized compulsory deduction of GH¢100.00 for Teachers Mutual Fund dues.

Call for Action:

In light of these grievances, teachers are calling on GNAT’s leadership, including Mr. Thomas Musah Tanko, GNAT Secretary, and Rev. Isaac, GNAT President, to promptly rectify the double dues deduction and refund the excess amount. They demand transparency and accountability in managing teachers’ finances and contributions.

Association’s Response:

GNAT has previously acknowledged the error deduction and outlined steps to address the issue with the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department. However, teachers remain adamant in demanding immediate resolution and restitution of their deducted funds.

As the controversy surrounding GNAT’s double dues deduction intensifies, teachers are adamant in their pursuit of justice and accountability. With their livelihoods at stake, they urge GNAT’s leadership to act swiftly and decisively to restore their trust and confidence in the association.
