Winneba, Ghana – In a major milestone for private education reform in Ghana, the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), in partnership with the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has successfully concluded the first academic session of its joint teacher education programme.

The pioneering cohort, comprising in-service teachers and school administrators from various regions, completed their end-of-session examinations earlier this month, marking the end of the initial phase of the academic year. The examinations were conducted smoothly and under strict academic standards.

This milestone comes as part of a bold initiative to transform professional training in Ghana’s private education sector by equipping educators with the necessary skills, academic rigor, and credentials to meet 21st-century learning demands.

“This is more than an academic exercise; it’s a national investment in quality education,” said a representative from GNACOPS. “These educators are returning to their schools better prepared, and that benefits every child they teach.”

Launched in early 2024, the GNACOPS–UEW collaboration was designed to bridge a critical training gap for the thousands of private school educators in Ghana who lacked formal teacher certification or ongoing professional development.

The programme offers flexible, high-quality academic modules tailored to in-service teachers and school leaders. It combines face-to-face and distance learning components, making it possible for educators to upgrade their qualifications without leaving their posts.

The successful completion of this first session demonstrates the programme’s strong foundation, supported by high student engagement, disciplined learning environments, and committed faculty.

“We are pleased with the academic performance and discipline demonstrated by this first cohort,” stated a UEW official. “The quality of work so far assures us of the great impact this programme will have on education in Ghana.”

As the programme transitions into its second session, participants will begin new modules focusing on pedagogy, educational leadership, assessment strategies, and inclusive education.

Organizers have urged students to maintain the momentum and to treat the upcoming academic work with the same dedication and focus that defined the first session.

The success of the programme is already drawing attention from other educational stakeholders, with many calling for expansion and support from government and development partners.

A Beacon for Private Education

With private schools accounting for a significant share of Ghana’s basic and secondary education delivery, this initiative comes at a crucial time. Stakeholders see the GNACOPS–UEW programme as a game-changer that can uplift teaching standards, boost student performance, and align private education with national benchmarks.

The programme is expected to open more cohorts in the 2025/2026 academic year, with growing interest from private educators across the country.

As the education sector works toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 – Quality Education, this partnership stands out as a model of innovation and collaboration.
