First Ghanaian to Win Prestigious Global Award for Teaching Excellence
Pakro, Eastern Region – April 2025: Portia Dzifa Dzilah, a committed teacher at Pakro Anglican Basic School, has made history as the first Ghanaian to be named the Sub-Saharan Africa regional winner of the 2025 Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards.
This prestigious recognition celebrates her tireless efforts in transforming the lives of children in Pakro, a rural farming community in the Akwapem South Municipal of Ghana’s Eastern Region.
Chosen from over 5,000 entries submitted by teachers across 101 countries, Dzilah’s work stood out due to her impactful initiatives in tackling pressing educational and social challenges in her community, including truancy, low enrollment, and teenage pregnancy.

A Mission Rooted in Service
Reacting to her win, Portia shared:
“This recognition is not just about me; it’s about the children of Pakro and every girl who’s ever been told her dreams are out of reach. I became a teacher to change lives. Education is a lifeline, and I will continue to fight for every child to have access to it.”
As a teacher of multiple subjects at the basic level, she spearheaded the creation of a Gender Club at her school, focusing on mentorship, menstrual hygiene, and girls’ empowerment. Her initiatives have led to visible improvements in school attendance and confidence among girls in her district.
Celebrating Excellence in Education
As a regional winner, Dzilah will receive:
- £500 worth of Cambridge educational books for her classroom
- A commemorative trophy
- Global exposure through Cambridge’s platforms
- Her name featured on the “Thank You” page of new Cambridge textbooks set to be released in November 2025
