Namibian student Victoria Kamai fulfills her dream of joining Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), highlighting the institution’s growing international appeal and commitment to excellence in healthcare training.

When Victoria Kamai was growing up in Namibia, she always had a clear dream: to study at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC).

“I always dreamed of studying at KMTC,” she says with a warm smile.

Her inspiration came from her aunt, Esther Mvula, who pursued Pharmacy at the University of Nairobi. Aunt Esther often shared fond memories of KMTC, where she met Mr Ronald Wasike—now the Registrar. These stories planted a lasting impression on young Victoria.

By high school, her dream had taken root. She began closely following KMTC’s updates on social media, particularly stories of students making a difference in healthcare.

“Every time I saw a post about students excelling, I would quietly say to myself, ‘One day, that will be me,’” she recalls.

After completing secondary school with strong results, Victoria reached out to KMTC. That bold step marked the beginning of a life-changing journey.

Fast forward to 17th March 2025—Victoria arrived in Nairobi just after 2:00 am. “There, it was the KMTC van waiting for me at the airport,” she says.

Her dream had finally taken flight.

Upon arrival at the Nairobi campus, she was warmly welcomed, with her accommodation already arranged and fellow students ready to help her settle in.

Now enrolled in a certificate program in medical engineering, Victoria is adjusting seamlessly.

“Everyone I have met so far has been incredibly friendly,” she says. One surprising comfort has been the linguistic closeness between Kiswahili and her native language, Oshiwambo.

“There’s a rhythm and familiarity between the two languages. It really helped me settle in,” she explains.

Victoria has felt at home thanks to the kindness she’s encountered across campus.

“Every office I walk into, people are helpful and warm. That human touch makes a big difference. I hope KMTC continues nurturing this culture,” she says.

Already setting her sights higher, she hopes to pursue a Diploma, a Higher Diploma, and eventually, a PhD.

“My goal is to help my country train the next generation of healthcare professionals. KMTC is the best place for anyone aspiring to enter the health sector. I’m so glad I made it here,” she adds.

He added that KMTC has a longstanding tradition of admitting international students from countries such as Malawi, DR Congo, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, and Zimbabwe.

“Our programmes are globally sought-after. We’re currently running exchange programmes with institutions like the University of British Columbia,” Dr. Oluoch said.

“When we say KMTC is globally competitive, we mean it. Our graduates are in demand around the world, and international students continue to choose us,” he concluded.
