Ferdinand EducationGhana | January 19 | Bureau of Languages Approves Ahanta Orthography for Use in Schools

The Bureau of Ghana Languages has approved the Ahanta Language Orthography for use in basic and senior high schools, paving the way for formal teaching, learning, and future examinations.

Official Endorsement for Schools in Ahanta Land

The Bureau of Ghana Languages has officially approved the Ahanta Language Orthography for use in schools across Ahanta land.

The decision clears the path for structured teaching and learning of the Ahanta language at both the basic and senior high school levels.

The endorsement marks a major step toward integrating Ahanta into Ghana’s formal education system, with long-term plans for it to become an examinable subject.

Review Process and Pilot Programme Assessment

The approval followed a detailed review of a technical paper submitted on the Ahanta Language Orthography.

The process was led by the Ahanta Language Project Committee, which has overseen the development and testing of the writing system.

After the initial assessment, the Bureau constituted a three-member review team to evaluate the implementation of the orthography in selected pilot schools.

Stakeholder Engagement Across Selected Schools

As part of the evaluation, the review team visited schools participating in the pilot programme. The visits were conducted in collaboration with the Basic Schools’ Coordinator of the Ahanta West Municipal Education Office and the Coordinator of the Ahanta Language Pilot Project.

The team interacted with teachers, learners, parents, traditional authorities, opinion leaders, church leaders, and community elders to assess both usability and acceptance of the orthography.

Positive Findings From the Field

Findings from the review confirmed that the Ahanta Language Orthography meets required academic and linguistic standards.

The pilot programme was also found to have produced positive learning outcomes in participating schools. Teachers and learners expressed strong enthusiasm for the formal teaching of the indigenous language, while parents welcomed the initiative as a way of preserving cultural identity.

Traditional Leaders Back Wider Implementation

Traditional authorities across Ahanta land voiced firm support for the introduction of Ahanta language instruction in schools. They described the move as timely and necessary for safeguarding the language for future generations.

Their endorsement played a key role in reinforcing the case for nationwide recognition within the Ahanta area.

Pathway to Examinable Status and Material Development

Following the positive evaluation, the Bureau of Ghana Languages has formally endorsed the use of the Ahanta Orthography in schools and in the development of teaching and learning materials.

The Bureau has also indicated its readiness to certify educational materials produced using the approved orthography, strengthening efforts to promote indigenous language education.

Significance for Indigenous Language Education

The approval is widely regarded as a major milestone toward making Ahanta an examinable subject within Ghana’s basic and secondary education system. It also aligns with broader national efforts to preserve indigenous languages while improving literacy and cultural relevance in education.
