An Assistant headteacher of Mpatasie D/A primary in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region, Akwasi Anane, has died after an illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) pit collapsed on him.

The 47-year-old is said to have gone to the site to work around 9 pm on Tuesday.

According to the district National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) office, Mr Anane was supervising a galamsey activity on his site but a portion of the pit where the assistant head teacher was standing caved in.

The effort to rescue him was not successful.

The body has been deposited at the St Martin Hospital at Agroyesum.
