Education Minister-Designate Haruna Iddrisu Announces Admission Fee Refunds

The Education Minister-designate, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed plans to refund admission fees paid by first-year students enrolled in public tertiary institutions.

This policy, part of President John Dramani Mahamas agenda to enhance access to higher education, was announced during Haruna Iddrisu’s vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, January 20, 2025.

GH₵345 Million Allocated for Refunds

The government will allocate GH₵345 million to cover admission fees for students pursuing general subject areas in tertiary institutions. However, the initiative excludes professional programs such as medicine.

“On the authority of President Mahama, and with the approval of the Minister of Finance-designate, Hon. Ato Forson, this provision will be included in the government’s Reset Budget. The funds will ensure that students undertaking courses in the general subject areas have their admission fees refunded,” Haruna Iddrisu stated.

Inclusive Policy for Paid and Unpaid Fees

Haruna Iddrisu assured that the policy would be inclusive, ensuring that students who have already paid their admission fees are also eligible for refunds.

“And for President Mahama, this is a model to experiment. We will look at it. How do we fare as a country? If it’s possible for expansion, then he will expand it. And he’s not asked that if you are able, you should not,” he added.
