EducationGhana| August 28| 2022: NTC announces date for the Licensing of Private School Teachers
National Teaching Council (NTC) has released the registration date to license private school teachers across the country.
According to the Director of Ghana National Council of Private Schools, Enoch Gyetuah, the National Teaching Council (NTC) license registration for private school teachers to be issued a temporal license by the National Teaching Council will start in early September.
In an interview with an Editorial Staff of AcademicWeek, the National Executive Director of GNACOPS said private school Associations are working closely with the National Teaching Council for a smooth license registration exercise.
“We are working with the National Teaching Council (NTC) on schedules for the registration throughout the country. For now, we will start with a pilot of the license registration in the Greater Accra region,” Obengfo Gyetuah stated.
Slated to commence in early September, the Private Schools Director noted the temporal license registration exercise will end on November 15, 2022. “There will be an extension of the date if the need is,” He said.
Asked how much a private school teacher will pay for the 2-year period temporal license subject to a 1-year renewal, Mr Kwasi Enoch said “we are discussing the cost with the NTC but a teacher will not pay more than GH¢300.”
“The license cost will be absorbed by private school owners to lessen the burden on the teachers. This will also ensure that only qualified or eligible teachers are registered to be issued the provisional license,” the GNACOPS official added.
Citing Section 79 of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), Gyetuah said it is prohibited for a school owner not knowingly or negligently employ a person as a teacher in his/her school unless the teacher is licensed.
According to him, any person particularly a school proprietor who contravenes the Act commits an offence and is liable to summary conviction to a fine or to a term of imprisonment of not less than six months and not more than one year.
The private school teachers’ license registration date comes after the Registrar of the NTC, Dr Christian Addai Poku said his outfit effective 2023 will go after teachers in the classrooms without a licence and not applying for it.
“We would be sending inspectors to all schools (private and public) to go and check. So we move to the school and take the data of the teachers to find out whether everybody is licensed
The law does not put the punishment on those who are teaching only but also on the person who is employing – both public and private schools,” Dr Christian Addai Poku told the Daily Graphic newspaper in a discussion.
Asked if the license is mandatory for teachers in the private education sector, the Director of the Teaching Council said “If you are teaching in the Ghanaian classroom, you are part of it, so both public and private school teachers.
If you are a private school teacher and you don’t have a full licence, you have to apply for a temporary license. between now and December this year, “you still have the right to apply if you are not a qualified teacher,” he told Daily Graphic.
