A female student of Tema-based DPS International Ghana, N’Adom Darko-Asare, after several rounds in the grand finale of the 2022 edition of The Spelling Bee competition Saturday was crowned the ultimate winner of the contest.
The 10-year-old winning word was “BATHYPELAGIC”, which is the part of the open ocean that extends from a depth of 1,000 to 4,000 m below the ocean surface. It lies between the mesopelagic above and the abyssopelagic below.

With three finalists out of the 115 participant spellers, Nii Odartey Elorm Manyo-Plange of The Roman Ridge School emerged first runner-up with Aarna Bhaveshkumar Tailor, 11 from the DPS International being the second runner-up.
DPS’s very own N’Adom Darko for her prize as the winner of the popular spelling contest in the country will represent Ghana at the 2022 edition of the international spelling competition dubbed Scripps National Spelling Bee.
An amount of $500, an engraved trophy, a fully installed DStv Explora decoder with a 6-month subscription, Indomie products, a gold medal, and GH¢300 Goil fuel vouchers were also given to her on February 5, 2022, as the winner.
The first runner up, Nii Odartey won a trip to Nairobi, $150 spending money, a fully installed DStv HD Zapper decoder with 3 months compact viewing, Indomie products, a silver medal and GH¢150 Goil fuel vouchers.
Aarna Bhaveshkumar Tailor also won a trip to Nairobi sponsored, $150 spending money, a fully installed DStv HD Zapper decoder with 3 months compact viewing, Indomie products, a bronze medal and GH¢150 Goil fuel vouchers.
As a token of appreciation for participation, all other spellers were given a certificate of recognition, Indomie products, customised T-shirts, commemorative medals, a customised bag and novels donated by the PAS-US Embassy.

Affiliated to the Scripps Spelling Bee in the USA, The Spelling Bee-GH is a literacy programme to improve spelling and vocabulary of age 7 and 13 primary students to learn and understand word concepts and develop English usage.
