WAEC has released the withheld 2024 WASSCE results following investigations into examination malpractice. Find out the details, final decisions, and implications for affected candidates.
WAEC Releases Withheld 2024 WASSCE Results After Investigation
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially announced the release of all withheld 2024 WASSCE results for school candidates following the completion of investigations into various examination malpractice cases.
This confirmation comes after numerous reports from students and stakeholders, as well as legal interventions regarding the fairness of WAEC’s withholding process.
Background of the Withheld Results
WAEC initially withheld results due to reported irregularities, including:
- Bringing foreign materials into examination halls.
- Snapping and posting exam questions on social media.
- Distribution of photocopied responses to candidates.
- Cases of invigilators assisting candidates during examinations.
According to a statement signed by Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, WAEC’s Director of Public Affairs, a total of 460,611 candidates from 1,003 schools sat for the 2024 WASSCE.
Following detailed investigations, WAEC took the following actions:
- Cancellation of subject results for 4,108 candidates for possession of foreign materials in exam halls.
- Cancellation of entire results for 483 candidates found using mobile phones.
- Withholding of subject results for 781 candidates.
- Withholding of entire results for 209 candidates due to suspected misconduct.
- Withholding of results for students in 319 schools suspected of mass cheating.

WAEC’s Investigation Process and Candidate Hearings
WAEC’s process for handling withheld results includes:
- Notifying affected schools: Heads of institutions receive official communication about the withheld results.
- Script scrutiny: WAEC reviews suspected cases, comparing candidates’ answers to identify possible collusion.
- Fair hearing for students: Affected candidates are invited to respond to allegations, accompanied by their parents or guardians.
- Final decision: Based on the hearings, WAEC either releases or cancels results.
Several candidates and parents raised concerns about the fairness of this process, particularly students who had no direct involvement in malpractice but had their results withheld due to alleged school-wide misconduct.
Legal Action and Court Ruling
Some schools and students challenged WAEC’s actions in court. A ruling was made in favor of releasing the affected candidates’ results. However, WAEC has filed a stay of execution, set to be heard on February 20, 2025, to ensure fairness in the process.
Meanwhile, WAEC has continued individual hearings for students and has gradually been releasing results deemed legitimate. The Council has assured that all investigations will be completed and final results released by February 28, 2025.
Reactions from Stakeholders
The Ghana Education Service (GES) and Ministry of Education have expressed concern over increasing cases of examination malpractice and the impact of mass cheating on Ghana’s education system. They are urging school authorities to prioritize integrity in the examination process.
Parents and students affected by the withholding of results have called for reforms in WAEC’s investigative process, citing that many innocent candidates have suffered unjustly.
Conclusion and the Way Forward
WAEC has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the integrity of its examinations while ensuring fairness for all students. The Council has also urged all candidates, parents, teachers, and school administrators to cooperate to ensure that future examinations remain credible and free from malpractice.
With the February 28 deadline approaching, students and stakeholders are keenly awaiting the final release of all withheld results.
