The University for Development Studies (UDS) has clinched first place in the 2025 Commonwealth Day Essay Competition, outshining top Ghanaian universities with a compelling submission on automation, innovation, and the future of work.
UDS Leads in Commonwealth Day Essay Challenge on Future of Work
The University for Development Studies (UDS) Student Parliament, representing both its Tamale and Nyankpala Campuses, has emerged as the winner of the 2025 Commonwealth Day Essay Competition. The announcement was made during this year’s celebration of the International Day of Parliamentarianism held in Parliament.
Themed “The Future of Work and Innovation: How Are Automation and Digital Transformation Reshaping Industries? Preparing the Youth for the Work of the Future,” the competition drew brilliant submissions from student parliaments in nine tertiary institutions across Ghana.
Top 3 Winners and Prizes
- 🥇 1st Place: UDS Student Parliament – GHS 12,000
- 🥈 2nd Place: University of Ghana – GHS 10,000
- 🥉 3rd Place: Islamic University – GHS 8,000
All other participants received GHS 2,000 as a token of appreciation for their insightful entries.
The UDS essay was praised for its clarity, depth of analysis, and forward-thinking proposals on how to equip the youth for a digitally transformed future.
NIB Sponsors the Awards
The competition was proudly sponsored by the National Investment Bank (NIB). During the event, NIB Managing Director, Dr. Doliwura Awushi Abdul-Malik Seidu Zakaria, highlighted the bank’s strong financial turnaround:
“We are proud to support youth innovation and democratic engagement. Our 51.86% capital adequacy ratio is the highest in Ghana, and we’ve returned to profitability for the first time in six years,” he noted.
Dr. Zakaria credited Parliament and other stakeholders for mobilizing nearly GHS 2 billion in just four months, emphasizing the bank’s plans to:
- Expand branch networks, particularly in underserved regions
- Launch 25 new digital applications to cut costs and improve efficiency
- Improve staff welfare and promote community development

Fostering Democratic Dialogue & Innovation
The essay competition served as a platform to empower student voices, spark constructive dialogue on national issues, and promote parliamentary education and democratic values among the youth.

- Accra Technical University
- SD Dombo University of Business and Integrated Studies
