Agriculture in SHS: Building Future Agripreneurs

In line with Ghana’s agricultural transformation agenda and TVET integration in second-cycle institutions, Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country are turning heads with impactful student-led agricultural projects. These projects not only equip learners with practical skills but also contribute to food security, environmental sustainability, and entrepreneurship.

The 2025 rankings feature schools with strong support from Kosmos Innovation Center, Mastercard Foundation, MoE Ghana, and district education directorates.

 

Top Agricultural SHS Projects in Ghana – 2025 Rankings

1. Odorgonno SHS – Ga Central District (Greater Accra)

Project Type: Onion Cultivation Under Irrigation
Highlight: The school set up a drip irrigation system for onion production on a previously unused land patch. Students manage the full crop cycle from seed selection to harvesting and sales.

 

2. Bawku SHS – Upper East Region

Project Type: Poultry Production (Broilers)
Highlight: Students maintain a 200-bird broiler facility, applying skills in animal husbandry, vaccination, feeding, and marketing. Profits fund science equipment and student prizes.

 

3. St. Monica’s SHS – Ashanti Region

Project Type: Mushroom Farming
Highlight: Girls at St. Monica’s are leading Ghana’s most successful SHS-based mushroom initiative, producing over 1,000 bags annually using sawdust composting and organic nutrient management.

 

4. Navrongo SHS – Upper East Region

Project Type: Vegetable Greenhouse Project
Highlight: With support from GES and a Canadian NGO, Navrongo SHS has introduced greenhouse farming—students grow tomatoes, lettuce, and bell peppers in climate-controlled conditions.

 

5. Ejura SHS – Ashanti Region

Project Type: Aquaculture
Highlight: A fish pond project raising catfish and tilapia as part of their agro-science curriculum. Students learn pond maintenance, water testing, and fish marketing.

 

6. Oti Boateng SHS – Eastern Region

Project Type: Maize Cultivation and Mechanization
Highlight: A mechanized maize field that trains students in tractor operation, fertilizer application, and post-harvest handling using silos.

 

7. Kpassa SHS – Oti Region

Project Type: Cassava & Yam Value Chain
Highlight: Students engage in root tuber production and gari processing using local tools and techniques. It links with a local agribusiness for internship placements.

 

8. Tolon SHS – Northern Region

Project Type: Rice Cultivation
Highlight: This school cultivates lowland rice using bunded fields and transplanting. The harvested grains are sold to the community to fund student welfare.

 

9. Agona SDA SHS – Central Region

Project Type: Tree Nursery & Climate Education
Highlight: Part of the Green Ghana program, students run a tree nursery that supplies over 2,000 seedlings annually to nearby basic schools and assemblies.

 

10. Bueman SHS – Volta Region

Project Type: Snail Farming (Heliculture)
Highlight: Girls in the Animal Husbandry Club lead a unique venture in rearing African giant snails in eco-shelters. It’s a low-cost, high-impact model for alternative proteins.
