Teachers Retire with Less Than GHS500,000 After 40 Years — GNAT Sounds Alarm

Ferdinand | EducationGhana | January 05 | Teachers Retire with Less Than GHS500,000 After 40 Years — GNAT Sounds Alarm

GNAT warns that teachers in Ghana retire with lump sums under GHS500,000, urging urgent reforms to pensions, salary, and welfare to protect the nation’s educators.

📢 Breaking: After decades of service, many Ghanaian teachers retire with less than GHS500,000 in lump sums. GNAT is calling on the government to act fast.

Why Teachers Are Struggling

Rev. Isaac Owusu, GNAT President, revealed that the challenges go far beyond retirement pay:
  1. Inadequate pensions: Teachers who served over 40 years get lump sums below GHS500,000.
  2. Poor infrastructure: Classrooms and learning spaces remain under-equipped.
  3. Delayed allowances: Irregular payments affect motivation and household stability.
  4. Safety concerns: Teachers face attacks or abuse from students and guardians.
“A teacher who has worked for over 40 years cannot even boast of GHS500,000 as his/her lump sum. This is not good,” Rev. Owusu stated.
