SSA-UoG Declares Indefinite Nationwide Strike Over Poor Conditions of Service

JUNE UG UTAG to SSA public embark on indefinite uni strike

The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike, citing unresolved concerns over conditions of service across public universities.

The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike, citing poor conditions of service and unresolved labour concerns affecting its members across public universities in the country.

Decision Follows Prolonged Agitation

The strike action follows months of engagements between the association, university managements, and relevant government agencies, which, according to SSA-UoG, have failed to yield concrete improvements in members’ welfare.

The association argues that senior staff continue to face stagnant remuneration, delayed negotiations, and unfavourable working conditions, despite repeated assurances.

Nationwide Impact on Public Universities

The declaration is expected to disrupt administrative and support services across public universities nationwide, as SSA-UoG members play critical roles in areas such as finance, admissions, human resources, academic administration, and student services.

Although teaching staff may not be directly involved, the absence of senior administrative personnel is likely to affect the smooth running of university operations, including examinations processing, records management, and general campus administration.

Call for Government Intervention

SSA-UoG has called on government and relevant stakeholders to treat the concerns of senior staff with urgency, stressing that the strike will remain in force until meaningful agreements are reached and implemented.

The association maintains that its action is not taken lightly but is necessary to protect the dignity, welfare, and professional value of senior staff within Ghana’s public university system.

Broader Labour Tensions in the Tertiary Sector

The strike adds to growing labour tensions within Ghana’s tertiary education sector, where various unions have, in recent times, raised concerns over conditions of service, funding constraints, and delayed policy implementation.

Further details, including specific demands and timelines for negotiations, are expected to be communicated by SSA-UoG in subsequent statements.
