“GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT-GH have announced a strike due to unaddressed issues by the Ministry of Education and GES. Learn about the grievances and demands leading to this industrial action.”

Three major pre-tertiary education labour unions – GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT-GH – have initiated a nationwide strike effective today, citing grievances related to poor conditions of service. The move comes after unsuccessful attempts to resolve pressing issues with the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Press Conference Announcement

The decision to strike was made public during a press conference held at the headquarters of NAGRAT in Accra on Wednesday, March 20, 2024. Reverend Isaac Owusu, President of GNAT, representing the unions, highlighted the failure of authorities to address critical concerns affecting teachers’ effectiveness in fulfilling their duties.

Unresolved Issues

Key among the grievances is the failure to renegotiate a Collective Agreement addressing allowances for teachers in underserved areas, entertainment, and housing/rent. Despite the expiration of the existing agreement in 2023, negotiations remained stagnant, leading to frustration among teachers.

Call for Action

In addition to the Collective Agreement, the unions demand the establishment of a functional Scheme of Service for Teachers, completion of the distribution of laptops to all teachers, and the reversal of salary blockages by the Office of Special Prosecutor (OSP) without due process.

Industrial Action Declaration

Faced with delays, unfulfilled promises, and threats from members, the unions have taken a decisive step by declaring a nationwide industrial action. The strike aims to compel the government and the GES to address the longstanding grievances and ensure fair treatment of educators.

Conclusion

The industrial strike initiated by GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT-GH underscores the urgent need for authorities to prioritize the welfare and working conditions of pre-tertiary educators. As the strike takes effect, stakeholders are urged to engage in constructive dialogue to swiftly resolve the impasse and restore normalcy to the education sector.
