The 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) preliminary stage opened in grand style on Monday, October 20, 2025, with several schools across Ghana battling for qualification. Day One saw thrilling contests, with Ofori Panin SHS, Amaniampong SHS, and Kumasi Academy delivering standout performances that placed them ahead of their rivals.

Contest 1: Ofori Panin SHS Sets a Blazing Record

Ofori Panin SHS began their NSMQ campaign with an extraordinary 79 points, securing a comfortable victory over Kpando SHS (40 pts) and Awe SHTS (20 pts). Their commanding performance positioned them as early contenders for a high-seed spot in the next round.This score ranks among the highest Day One tallies in recent NSMQ preliminaries, signalling Ofori Panin’s readiness for national competition.

Contest 2: Tight Finish in Kumasi as KNUST SHS Triumphs

In one of the closest battles of the day, KNUST SHS clinched victory with 46 points, edging Wovenu SHTS (39 pts) and Afua Kobi Ampem Girls’ SHS (36 pts). The margin was slim throughout the rounds, showcasing strong competition among all three schools.

Contest 3: Anlo SHS Reclaims Regional Pride

Anlo SHS secured a morale-boosting win with 44 points, narrowly defeating Sonrise Christian SHS (41 pts), while Bawku SHTS trailed with 9 points. The contest underscored Anlo’s determination to re-establish its academic dominance in the Volta Region after previous early exits.

Contest 4: O’Reilly SHS Records Resilient Win

In an evenly matched encounter, O’Reilly SHS pulled through with 40 points, outclassing St. Andrews SHS (31 pts) and SDA SHS, Bekwai (27 pts). The Accra-based school’s solid Round Four performance sealed the victory.

Contest 5: Sogakope SHS Lights Up the Stage

Sogakope SHS impressed spectators with a confident 57 points, beating Manya Krobo SHS (43 pts) and St. Joseph’s SHS (11 pts). Their steady accuracy and speed in problem-solving kept the crowd cheering throughout.

Contest 6: Kwahu Tafo SHS Holds Firm Against Tarkwa and Edinaman

Kwahu Tafo SHS scored 42 points to triumph over Tarkwa SHS (34 pts) and Edinaman SHS (31 pts), demonstrating balanced teamwork and consistent round performance.

Contest 7: Amaniampong SHS Breaks into the 60s Club

One of the day’s biggest moments came from Amaniampong SHS, which delivered a remarkable 69 points against OLA SHS, Ho (41 pts) and Juaboso SHS (24 pts). Their high score placed them among the early tournament favourites.

Contest 8: Fafraha Community SHS Surprises Tamale Islamic Science SHS

In one of the few upsets, Fafraha Community SHS stunned Tamale Islamic Science SHS with 37 points, leaving the Northern team at 27 points, while Kumasi Wesley Girls’ SHS managed 12 points. The victory marks Fafraha’s best start in recent years.

Contest 9: Kumasi Academy and St Louis Impress the Nation

The final contest of the day lived up to expectation. Kumasi Academy (59 pts) defeated St Louis SHS (42 pts) and Bunkpurugu SHTS (17 pts) in a spirited battle that reflected the Ashanti Region’s dominance in STEM contests.
