NaCCA Trains Private School Teachers on New Curriculum

About one hundred and thirty master trainers from private schools converged at the Ghana Atomic Energy Agency on 24th July 2019 for a five-day training on the revised KG – Primary Six curriculum starting in all schools from September 2019.

The master trainers were drawn from Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS), the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACoPS), West Africa Montessori Association (WAMA) and the Federation for Educational Research & Development (FERD) across the country.

According to the Executive Secretary of NaCCA Dr. Prince H. Armah, the old primary school curriculum which had a number of challenges leading to Ghana placing last in various international assessments.

The revised curriculum seeks to build character and nature values of our children to become citizens we can be proud of. It focuses on wRiting, Reading, aRithmetic and cReativity (4Rs) and has features such as the strengthening the teaching of maths, the reintroduction of history of Ghana and the strengthening of the teaching of French among many others.

During the opening ceremony, the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Adu Twum said private schools should look to making themselves unique, catering to student needs and becoming internationally competitive.

The current reform in the education sector is not cosmetic, it has been designed to boost the nation’s socio-economic development, and improve access, quality and relevance.

He added that this is a rear opportunity to use education to transform schools and it cannot be done without the help of private schools. Stating that “When students do well, we all do well”.

The Ministry of Education and NaCCA have taken steps to ensure that all private schools are ready by September 2019. The first step is the training of the private school’s master trainers.

This will be followed by training of all the private school teachers in all 16 regions in the country which will be led by the leadership of the private schools’ associations.

Over the next few weeks, the leadership of the private schools will train their teachers in 98 training centres. Provision has also been made for schools to access to copies of the revised curriculum and teacher resource packs for effective implementation of the new curriculum.
