NaCCA Holds National Stakeholder Engagement on the draft CCP Curriculum for JHS 1 to SHS 1

The Hon. Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has admonished all Ghanaians to embrace the Common Core Programme Curriculum which is currently being developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment ( NaCCA) and contribute towards its successful implementation.

In a keynote address, he described the CCP as a game-changer in the delivery of quality education to Ghanaian High School students.

The Hon. Deputy Minister made these remarks at a stakeholder engagement on the draft common core programme curriculum for basic 7-10 (JHS 1 – SHS 1) held in Accra on Friday, 28th February 2020 at the Bediako Hall, GNAT Headquarters.

The engagement brought together over one thousand (1000) stakeholders consisting of dignitaries and reps from the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, other agencies of the Ministry of Education, representatives from Teacher and Student Unions, Publishing Houses, NGOs, CSOs, Educational Administrators, Private School Associations and Traditional Leaders.

The engagement served as a platform for various stakeholders to make inputs to improve the curriculum.

The forum forms part of NaCCA’s efforts to quality assure the CCP Curriculum in order to produce a curriculum that is truly national which will help shape the next generation and the future of this country.

The Common Core Programme is a four-year education programme designed to offer learners in Basic 7 to Basic 10 (JHS1 – SHS1) the opportunity to prepare for higher education and the world of work or both.

It’s made up of nine learning areas, namely: Languages, Mathematics, Science, Creative Arts and Design, Computing, Career Technology, Physical and Health Education, Social Studies and Religious and Moral Education.

The Executive Secretary of NaCCA, Dr. Prince Hamid Armah, in his address outlined the rationale, mission and vision of the Common Core Programme.

He explained that the CCP seeks to produce a new generation of globally competitive Ghanaian youth with employable skills and work ethics.

The event was chaired by Prof Dominic Fobih, a former Minister of Education.
Other dignitaries who graced the occasion included Prof. Akwasi Opoku-Amankwah, Director General of GES, Mr Anthony Boateng (Deputy Director-General, Managerial Services), Dr. Kwabena Tandoh, Deputy Director-General of GES in charge of Quality and Access, Mrs. Catherine Pinkrah, Director Pre-Tertiary Education- MoE, Prof. Kwame Osei Kwarteng, Chairman of the NaCCA Council and Mr Michael Nsowah, the Council Chair of the GES.

At the end of the event, stakeholders were optimistic of the fact that with the necessary support, the CCP will contribute tremendously to produce a new generation of productive Ghanaian high school graduates.
