Koforidua Technical University wins maiden PASSAG competition
The Koforidua Technical University (KTU) has emerged winners of the maiden edition of the Procurement and Supply Students Association of Ghana (PASSAG) quiz competition held in Koforidua on Friday, June 25, 2021.

The Koforidua Technical University (KTU) has emerged as winners of the maiden edition of the Procurement and Supply Students Association of Ghana (PASSAG) quiz competition held in Koforidua on Friday, June 25, 2021.

KTU thumped three other Technical Universities – Accra Technical University (ATU), Sunyani Technical University (STU) and Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) – to lift the trophy in the inter-tertiary contest hosted by KTU.

Emerging as winners of the top prize, KTU represented by Michael Koranteng Donkor, Frank Djan Otchere and Darryl Sellasie Harris secured 42 points after three rounds of the contest which centred on public procurement laws and policies, and current affairs; leaving behind ATU, STU, and KsTU who secured 35, 33, and 28 points respectively.

Excitement and Challenges

The Head of the Department of Procurement and Supply Science at KTU, Mr Emmanuel Agyekum, in an interview, expressed delight at the triumph of the students from his Department.

He said the victory established that KTU has been one of the best if not the best among other tertiary schools in the country.

“I am very happy for the victory; this shows that our students really understood what we thought them in the classrooms and can compete at the job market. The ability to demonstrate what you’ve learnt in a contest with other equally great schools means we are doing very well. It also affirms that KTU is one of the best, if not the best tertiary school in the country especially with the study of Procurement and Supply Science,” he told the Daily Graphic.

He also lamented challenges facing the Department, especially with lack of teaching materials.

“One of the challenges we have as a Department has to do with teaching materials, including projectors even though management has taken it up. Also, most of the books we use are written by foreigners especially British and it cost so much so we don’t have much in the library. It makes teaching sometimes difficult especially when students would have to access them to do some research,” he said.

He added that the Department also needed a laboratory to do simulation exercises which are very much needed in the job market.

Mr Agyekum appealed to the government and the Public Procurement Authority, as well as other corporate organisations to support the Department in addressing some of its pressing challenges.

Purpose

The President of PASSAG KTU Chapter, Mr Divine Obrim Junior who initiated the programme in collaboration with his HOD, Mr Emmanuel Agyekum, said the inter-tertiary quiz competition and games was to test their resolve on some of things learnt in the classroom and familiarize with students from other universities.

He said procurement and supply required a lot of networking hence the need to familiarize with some faces they would be working together with in different companies across the country in the nearest future.

Mr Obrim lamented the lack of funding for the event as the reason why other Technical Universities could not join the exercise.

“We had wanted to make it bigger to include all other Technical Universities across the country, but it hasn’t been easy securing funds for such a programme. We hope that in the next edition we are able to get sponsors for the programme,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to all schools who participated in the contest; while eulogizing KTU for emerging winners of the maiden competition.

Meanwhile, in other disciplines, KTU again emerged winners of the football game among the four participating schools, whereas STU won the volleyball game.
