KNUST and partners unveil a Solar Steam Cooker to reduce firewood usage in Senior High Schools, promoting sustainable and eco-friendly cooking practices.
Â
The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in collaboration with its partners, has unveiled a groundbreaking Solar Steam Cooker designed to reduce reliance on firewood for cooking in Senior High Schools (SHS). This innovative solution harnesses solar energy, offering a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional cooking methods.
The Solar Steam Cooker aims to address the environmental challenges posed by deforestation and carbon emissions linked to firewood usage. By utilizing renewable solar energy, this invention aligns with global efforts to combat climate change while promoting sustainable culinary practices in institutions.
To showcase the effectiveness of the Solar Steam Cooker, KNUST organized a demonstration workshop in Kumasi for matrons and cooks from selected Senior High Schools. The workshop provided hands-on training and highlighted the cooker’s potential to transform food preparation in schools by offering a cleaner, safer, and cost-effective alternative.
Key Benefits of the Solar Steam Cooker:
- Reduces dependence on firewood, minimizing deforestation.
- Lowers carbon emissions, contributing to a greener environment.
- Reduces health risks associated with smoke inhalation.
- Cuts cooking costs for schools in the long term.
KNUST continues to lead in innovation and sustainability, demonstrating its commitment to solving real-world problems with practical solutions. The Solar Steam Cooker is expected to gain widespread adoption, setting a benchmark for environmentally conscious cooking practices in educational institutions and beyond.
