Excellence in Setting and Infrastructure
HTU also secured 2nd place in Africa under the “Setting and Infrastructure” category, a key component of the UI GreenMetric assessment. This category evaluates green spaces, environmental planning, health and safety systems, and sustainability-driven infrastructure.
The ranking reflects the University’s sustained investment in environmentally responsible infrastructure and campus development.
Global Sustainability Benchmark
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings assess universities worldwide based on measurable sustainability indicators, including energy use, waste management, water conservation, transportation, education, and infrastructure.
Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, Dr. Vishnu Juwono, stated that the rankings emphasise “measurable action and collective learning” across global campuses. HTU’s performance aligns with this principle, demonstrating that sustainability commitments must translate into policies, programmes, and tangible outcomes.
Vice-Chancellor Reacts
The Vice-Chancellor of HTU, Prof. Ben Q. Honyenuga, described the achievement as confirmation that the University is progressing in the right direction.
He noted that retaining the top national position while advancing regionally reflects deliberate investments in sustainable infrastructure and environmental responsibility.
“Our progress reflects the conscientious investments in sustainable infrastructure, environmental stewardship, and a culture that places sustainability at the heart of teaching, research, and community engagement,” he stated.
Prof. Honyenuga further urged stakeholders to prioritise sustainable environmental practices, emphasising that responsible institutional action has the potential to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Raising Ghana’s Sustainability Profile
HTU’s continued leadership strengthens Ghana’s presence in global sustainability discourse. By maintaining national dominance and improving its continental standing, the University is setting a benchmark for West African higher education institutions seeking to embed sustainability into institutional policy and practice.
