2022: How Government and Organised Labour arrived at the 15% COLA Negotiation

HOW

EducationGhana| July 14| How Government and Organised Labour arrived at the 15% COLA Negotiation:

The outcome of the meeting on the cost of living allowance “COLA ” which was held between the Government and Organised Labour.

The Chairmen called the meeting to order at 1 pm and a prayer was said and chair. introduction to the government team.

The General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress did the same introduction to Organised Labour members.

Dr Yaw. after his introduction went straight to mention our position as far as the cost of living allowance is concerned at 20%.

The Government team decided to go for a caucus meeting and came back to confirm that we are actually in crisis, but the government do not have much strength to respond to the call of the Labour union, so they could only give us 5%.

Organised Labour also decided to caucus, of which we insisted that the 20% is what we want and nothing else. And if they are not going to give us that offer, Organised Labour is going to join in the strike action.

After the caucus, the decision Organised Labour took was read to the government team,

But the government team did not want to commit but stood by their 5% so there was another caucus in which we agreed to bring it down to 18% if they suggest a 10%  otherwise the meeting will be adjourned.

The Government team came back from caucus and said they could offer a 7.5% COLA.

There was another caucus and the government wanted to give Organised Labour 10% and Organised Labour asked them to make it 15% and that was their final rate.

The Government came back from caucus again and proposed 11% but the Unions remained at 15% which was around 6:03 pm.

Finally, the Government team after further consultation agreed to pay 15%.  at exactly 6:43 pm July 14, 2022
