GTEC has ordered fee refunds and confirmed prosecutions following the shutdown of Royal Nursing College in Kumasi over regulatory breaches, with UCC suspending its affiliation.
The (GTEC) has issued a firm update on the status of the Royal Nursing College at Tafo Nhyiaeso in , confirming far-reaching regulatory actions after the institution’s shutdown.
The public notice, dated March 19, 2026, follows the closure of the college on February 19 over what authorities described as serious regulatory irregularities and anomalies.
UCC Suspends Affiliation After Licence Withdrawal
According to GTEC, the (UCC), which previously served as the affiliate university for the college, has officially suspended its affiliation.
This decision follows the withdrawal of the college’s licence by the (N&MC) and the revocation of its institutional accreditation by GTEC.
The move effectively ends all formal academic oversight and mentorship previously provided to the college.
Level 100 and 200 Students Not Recognised
In a significant development, GTEC disclosed that UCC has no record of students in Levels 100 and 200 at the college.
This, according to the Commission, indicates that the affected students were neither properly admitted nor formally matriculated.
As a result, these students are not recognised by the , as their admissions occurred after the institution had been directed to cease fresh admissions.
GTEC has therefore directed the college to refund all fees paid by these students.
Audit for Level 300 Students
For continuing students, the situation remains conditional. GTEC stated that UCC will conduct a comprehensive audit of all Level 300 students.
Only those who meet the prescribed entry requirements will be absorbed into recognised academic programmes under UCC supervision.
Closure Directive Remains in Force
The Commission emphasised that its earlier directive on the closure of the college remains fully in force.
This position is reinforced by three key actions:
- Revocation of accreditation by GTEC
- Withdrawal of licence by the Nursing and Midwifery Council
- Suspension of affiliation by UCC
Together, these measures confirm that the institution no longer has legal authority to operate.
Management Faces Prosecution
GTEC further revealed that members of the college’s management who were arrested during regulatory inspections have been processed for prosecution.
The Commission did not provide details of the charges but indicated that the action forms part of efforts to enforce compliance within the tertiary education sector.
Public Advised to Verify Accreditation
The has urged prospective students and the general public to verify the accreditation status of tertiary institutions before seeking admission.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to maintaining quality, integrity, and order within Ghana’s higher education system.
