GNAT Threatens School Closures Over Attacks on Teachers

Ferdinand EducationGhana | January 05 | GNAT Threatens School Closures Over Attacks on Teachers

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has issued a stern warning: schools may be forced to close if assaults on teachers continue across the country.

Speaking at GNAT’s 7th National Quadrennial Conference in Accra, President Rev. Isaac Owusu highlighted the growing trend of violence against educators, stressing that such incidents undermine education delivery and create unsafe working conditions. “Teachers deserve protection and respect. We will take firm action if their safety is not guaranteed,” Rev. Owusu stated.

Shocking Incidents Highlight Danger

Rev. Owusu cited several alarming cases, including a recent tragedy in the Garu District of the Upper East Region, where a teacher, Yahya Bukari, was shot dead in the line of duty while protecting students.

“But for his intervention, many schoolchildren could have been harmed. Until today, we have heard nothing. This cannot continue,” he said. The association is demanding urgent reforms, including a review of the Single Spine Pay Policy, citing current conditions of service as inadequate and unfair to educators.

President Mahama Assures Swift Action

In response, President John Dramani Mahama expressed shock at the violence and assured teachers that the government would act decisively against assaults. “I saw the video where a teacher was beaten for refusing to allow students to cheat. The parents claimed to have settled the matter at the police station. This is assault—it is criminal,” he said.

The President criticized the handling of such incidents and emphasized that legal processes must be followed. “The children involved should have been formally booked, or at least bonded for good behaviour. Assaults on teachers will not be tolerated. We will deal with it,” he stated.

GNAT’s Commitment

The association reaffirmed its dedication to protecting teachers’ safety, welfare, and dignity, pledging to continue engaging government and relevant stakeholders to ensure a secure working environment for all educators.
