GNAT’s 2026 National Delegates Conference has adopted major resolutions, including increases in teachers’ fund contributions, reduced loan interest rates, and a 100% increase in the cancer fund.

 The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has adopted a series of far-reaching resolutions aimed at improving the welfare, financial security, and professional development of teachers across the country.The resolutions were approved at the GNAT National Delegates Conference 2026, following extensive deliberations by delegates drawn from all regions of Ghana.

Teachers’ Fund Contribution Increased

One of the major decisions taken at the conference was the upward revision of the minimum contribution to the Teachers’ Fund, which has been increased from GH¢120 to GH¢150.Union leaders explained that the adjustment is necessary to strengthen the sustainability of the fund and enhance its capacity to support members.

Loan Interest Rate Reduced

In a move welcomed by many teachers, delegates approved a reduction in the Teachers’ Fund loan interest rate from 16 percent to 14 percent.The reduction is expected to ease the financial burden on teachers who rely on the fund for personal and professional needs. RELATED ARTICLES

Cancer Fund Sees 100% Increase

The conference also approved a 100 percent increase in the Cancer Fund contribution, raising it from GH¢5 to GH¢10.GNAT leadership described the decision as a response to rising healthcare costs and the growing need to provide stronger support for members facing critical health challenges.  

Update on GESOPS Tier 2 Contributions

Members were informed that GLICO is no longer managing the Tier 2 (GESOPS) pension fund.Teachers were therefore advised to check their contribution status using the short code *733#, to ensure accurate records and transparency in pension management.

Professional Development Through GNAT IRIRS

Delegates were also encouraged to take advantage of academic programmes offered by the GNAT Institute of Research, Innovation and Reform Studies (IRIRS).The institute runs accredited graduate programmes, and GNAT members who enrol are entitled to a 20 percent reduction in admission fees, as part of efforts to promote continuous professional development.

Expansion of Teachers’ Fund Loan Categories

Additionally, the conference approved an expansion in the categories of loans available under the Teachers’ Fund, allowing members to access more flexible financing options tailored to diverse needs.

The resolutions adopted at the 2026 conference signal GNAT’s renewed commitment to strengthening teacher welfare, improving access to affordable credit, and supporting the health and professional growth of its members.Education stakeholders say the full implementation of these decisions will be closely watched by teachers nationwide.
