The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the 2024/2025 academic calendar for second cycle schools, starting October 30. This new schedule aims to stabilize the academic year and align with future WASSCE and BECE exams.

 

The  Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially unveiled the 2024/2025 academic calendar  for all second cycle institutions across the country. Announced in a directive dated  October 16, 2024 , the new calendar outlines key schedules and important dates for both new and continuing students, aiming to restore stability to the academic year following disruptions in recent years.

Key Highlights of the Academic Calendar

The  2024/2025 academic year  will commence on  Wednesday, October 30, 2024 , for all students, including those attending  Single Track and Transitional schools . The calendar provides a structured roadmap for both  new entrants and continuing students , ensuring a smooth transition and efficient academic planning. Here are the key aspects of the schedule:

 Start of the Academic Year: 

The academic year will begin on  October 30, 2024 , for all students, including those attending  Single Track and Transitional schools .

 Promotion of Transitional Calendar Students: 

Current first-year students  in  Transitional Calendar schools  will conclude their  2023/2024 academic year on October 28, 2024 , and immediately transition to  Form 2 .

 Reopening for Continuing Students: 

–  Returning students  in  Single Track schools  are also set to resume classes on  October 30, 2024 , marking the beginning of the new academic year.

 Incoming First-Year Students  

Newly admitted Form 1 students  in both  Single Track and Transitional schools  will also start their academic journey on  October 30, 2024 .

 Objective of the Calendar Adjustment: 

– The GES aims to  restore the traditional September start date  in the future. Additionally, this new calendar aligns with plans to hold the  2024/2025 WASSCE in May/June 2025

 2024/2025 Academic Schedules and Holiday Breaks 

The academic calendar is structured to provide ample learning time, with specific schedules for  Form 1, Form 2, and Form 3 students . It includes scheduled  breaks and holidays  to ensure a balanced academic life:

 

Break for Eligible Voters 

From  December 5 to 9, 2024 , schools will observe a short break for students eligible to vote.

 Christmas Break 

Schools will close for the  Christmas holiday from December 20, 2024, to January 2, 2025

 Impact of the Calendar Adjustment 

This calendar adjustment is a significant move towards  stabilizing the academic schedule , which had been disrupted in recent years due to factors like the  COVID-19 pandemic . By introducing this revised schedule, the GES aims to provide sufficient academic time and adequate preparation for  national examinations , including the  WASSCE  and  BECE
