Ferdinand | EducationGhana | December 20 | GES releases 2023 Academic Calendar for Basic and Senior High Schools
The Ghana Education Service (GES) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education has released the proposed 2022/2023 Academic Year Calendar for Senior High Schools (SHS), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Basic Schools ahead of the coming academic year.
DOUBLE TRACK
According to the Calendar for SHTS, there will not be any Double Track for grade level, however, only a two-year group of the three cohorts of students will be in school at any period in time for 2023.
The calendar ensures that each year group meets or exceeds the total minimum contact hours of 3,402 hours over the three years.
CONTACT WEEKS & HOURS
In 2023, Form 3 students will spend a maximum of 34 weeks in school with 1,360 total contact hours.
The Form 2 students will spend a maximum of 33 weeks in school with 1,320 contact hours.
The Form 1 students will spend a maximum of 27 weeks in school with 1,080 contact hours.
CONTACT TRANSLATED INTO DAYS & HOURS
Form 3 students will spend 162 days which will be 1,296 contact hours.
Form 2 students will spend 166 days which will be 1,328 contact hours.
Form 1 students will spend 137 days which will be 1,096 contact hours.
WASSCE DATE IN 2023
Per the calendar, candidates for the WASSCE 2023 will sit for their examination from August to September.
TRANSITIONAL CALENDAR
Due to the start of the calendar in January 2023, SHS 3 cannot enjoy a prolonged
break. This is to allow SHS 1 and SHS 2 to be in school as well.
This means that the calendar will have to be fine-tuned so that SHS 3 students can attend class continuously from January 2023 through the end of September 2023, when the WASSCE ends.
In the transitional option, two (2) of the three (3) year groups must be in school at a given time.
In addition, the Colleges of Education have received an increase in their schools’
enrolment as a result of the Free Senior High School programme which required a short term solution.
Finally, the 2023 calendar ensures that teachers get a break.
