The Ghana Education Service  (GES) after asking heads of public basic schools to commence academic activities from 8:00 Am until 3:00 Pm Monday to Friday has said classes with more than 50 students will run shift system amid coronavirus.

A staff of the Education Service speaking to EducationWeb.com.gh on Thursday said the shift system is to ensure social/physical distancing among the students as part of efforts to slow and curb the locally transmitted virus.

According to him,  GES has Directed District Directors to run a shift to ensure social distancing adding that the first shift will be from 8:00 Am to 11:00 Am and the second shift from 12:00 Pm to 3:00 Pm

“If learners exceed 50 per class, District Directors have the discretion to run shift system to ensure social distancing, so the first shift will be from 8:00 Am to 11:00 Am and second shift from 12:00 Pm to 3:00 Pm,” the GES staff stated.

Explaining why his outfit has suddenly extended the instructional hours for students in all government schools across the country, he noted it is to cover lost contact hours as a result of the outbreak of the global Covid-19 pandemic.

But, The Teacher Unions (NAGRAT, GNAT and CCT-GH) in a press release have asked the Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to withdraw the extension of the school hours for public basic schools in the country.

According to the Union, the hours’ teachers are required to work per day and per week should be determined by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Teacher Unions as required by the Collective Agreement.
