Newmont Goldcorp Ghana has awarded Wesley Girls High School as the best performing female school in the just ended 2019 edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz.

The school, based in Cape Coast in the Central Region, was the only female school to have advanced to the semi final of this year’s competition.

For their performance, the contestants have received a cash prize of GHC 20,000 from the leading gold producer.

The  contestants will also have the opportunity to visit the company’s mines to familiarize themselves with the mines operations.

During their visit, the female students would participate in the New Futures for Girls Leadership Camp, a two-day seminar organized by Newmont Goldcorp Ghana to develop the leadership skills in young women and prepare them for the job market.

According to the gold mining company, the award is in line with their Inclusion value to support Girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The company has also said that supporting women in the STEM disciplines would contribute significantly to efforts in advancing the inclusion of women in male-dominated fields such as mining.

Wesley Girls were denied a place in the grand final of the competition by 2018 Champions, St. Peter’s Senior High School.

That notwithstanding, they proved their mettle after defeating four-time winners Prempeh College and Greater Accra Region giant Achimota School at the Quarterfinal of the competition.
