Attafuah Senior High Technical School has been disqualified from the 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) for alleged cheating during Round Four of their preliminary contest.
Accra, Ghana — October 24, 2025
Attafuah Senior High Technical School (Attafuah SHTS) has been disqualified from the ongoing 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) after breaching competition rules during the Preliminary Round of the contest.
The disqualification was announced after reports confirmed that the team received unauthorised assistance during Round Four, commonly referred to in NSMQ circles as the “Problem of the Day” round.
Incident During Round Four
According to contest officials, Attafuah SHTS allegedly engaged in “whispers or external help” while attempting to answer questions. This act violated the NSMQ’s strict code of conduct, which prohibits any form of communication or assistance between contestants and their supporters once a contest begins.
As a result, the team’s Round Four performance was nullified, and the school was immediately disqualified from continuing in the competition.
Immediate Consequences
The disqualification had an immediate effect on the contest outcome. Both Serwaa Nyarko Girls’ SHS and Northern School of Business—who were tied with 34 points—were reinstated to complete the final round, after which Serwaa Nyarko Girls’ SHS emerged as the eventual winner and advanced to the One-Eighth Stage.
The organisers, Primetime Limited, reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining fairness, discipline, and integrity throughout the competition, which is Ghana’s most prestigious academic contest.
Public Reactions
The incident has sparked widespread debate among education enthusiasts and former students online. While some sympathised with Attafuah SHTS, calling the punishment “harsh but fair,” others praised the organisers for upholding the rules to preserve the competition’s credibility.
Many Ghanaians on social media described the disqualification as a reminder of the importance of discipline, honesty, and ethical conduct in academic competitions.
About the NSMQ
The National Science and Maths Quiz, organised annually by Primetime Limited, aims to promote the study of science and mathematics and foster healthy academic rivalry among second-cycle institutions across Ghana. The 2025 edition has featured intense contests and strong performances from both established schools and rising challengers.
