Teacher Unions in the Ghana Education Service (GES) have issued a statement calling on the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to address Teachers’ Upgrading and Allowance challenges before the end of April 2021 to ensure Industrial Peace.
The teacher unions including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers -Ghana (CCT-GH) in their March 23, 2021 statement addressed to the Minister of Education stated two main categories of challenges being faced by teachers.

Responsibility Allowances
Firstly, the unions said teachers who hold various responsibilities in the various educational institutions and are entitled to responsibility allowances have had their allowances stopped when they were promoted to another rank in the service.
The Unions said, despite several efforts by the affected teachers and the teacher unions, a great number of these teachers have not had their allowances restored.

Upgrading of Teachers
In addition, the Unions lamented that another problem that is demotivating and demoralizing teachers is the failure by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to upgrade to the appropriate ranks teachers who have both on their own, financed themselves to acquire degrees, and those who have completed their study leaves with or without pay.
Call to Action
The teacher Unions are thereby calling on the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to address Teachers’ Upgrading and Allowance challenges before the end of April 2021 to ensure Industrial Peace.
