Takoradi, Accra. The Ghana Teacher Prize Award comes off tomorrow October 5, 2023, at the Takoradi in the Western Region in the thee โ€œThe Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: The Global Imperative to reveres the Teacher Shortageโ€.

George Sarfo Kantanka, a distinguished District Director of Education, has consistently demonstrated innovation, achievement, and profound community impact.
He has initiated several educational projects, including the construction of classroom blocks, the establishment of computer laboratories, and the refurbishment of the districtโ€™s education office.

Unwavering Commitment to Akrofuomโ€™s Educational Future

Engaging with local religious and community leaders, he annually motivates junior high school students and addresses district staffing needs. Georgeโ€™s devotion goes beyond the walls of his school.
He has visited churches and mosques in Akrofuom, rallying congregants for educational support. His efforts in 2021 and 2022 led to impactful community engagements across all communities in the Akrofuom district, where he shared his visionary educational goals.

Support to Teachers

George has always been at the forefront of initiatives that uplift and support educators and professionals.
In 2007, he co-founded the Methodist Teachers and Workers Welfare Association, a venture aimed at providing financial assistance to teachers and other professionals.
Recognizing the need for mutual support among educators, he established the Professional Teachers Mutual Support Scheme in 2019, specifically for the heads and teachers of Manhyia Sub-Metro. Currently, he is in the process of setting up Teachersโ€™ Musical Bands (TMB) in both Kumasi and Obuasi/Akrofuom, further showcasing his dedication to the teaching community.

Eugene Asamoahโ€™s innovative streak shines through in his initiatives. Eugene was pivotal in organising the maiden District Science and Mathematics Quiz and Science Fair, which led to the formation of science and mathematics clubs in various schools. This initiative saw 200 BECE candidates opting for science programmes in senior high schools.
Elevating the underprivileged
Eugene has collaborated with UNICEF-Ghana as a district focal person and master trainer, executing projects to uplift underprivileged pupils. His advocacy and community sensitisation efforts, coupled with his skill in report writing, led to significant funds being allocated for community engagement activities. One such initiative led to a pupil with special needs receiving a presidential award in 2019.

Driving Community Progressย 

In terms of community impact, Eugeneโ€™s efforts have been transformative. He secured funds for the repair of a grounded office vehicle, ensuring effective monitoring of the 2019 BECE. His proposal writing skills have also led to capacity-building workshops for stakeholders, resulting in improved BECE performance.

Salomey understands the pivotal role of innovation in todayโ€™s educational landscape and has, therefore, championed the integration of the Standard-Based Curriculum and Galop in her school.
She is committed to the continuous professional development of her staff and collaborates with industry experts to organize Professional Learning Committees (PLC), positioning her teachers at the cutting edge of pedagogical techniques. This emphasis on growth has empowered the staff, equipping them to navigate educational challenges effectively.

Building Community and Infrastructureย 

Salomeyโ€™s leadership extends to nurturing her schoolโ€™s community. By cultivating relationships with parents, the School Management Committee (SMC), and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), she has facilitated key infrastructural projects, such as the KG 1A block roofing and the establishment of a two-unit classroom block.
Her initiatives also include an award scheme to celebrate excellence and a focus on co-curricular activities, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience for students.

Infrastructure and Growth

Under Mariamaโ€™s stewardship, the institute has seen unparalleled infrastructural growth. Key developments include a multipurpose block for Hospitality and Catering Management, a state-of-the-art computer lab for Software Development, and advanced workshops for fashion and automotive engineering.
Additionally, Mariama has spearheaded the acquisition of a 50-acre land for a second campus. This new land has already seen the production of thousands of blocks, a mechanized borehole, and successful farming ventures, yielding substantial maize and soya bean harvests.
