Publishing in SCOPUS-indexed journals remains a major goal for PhD candidates and early-career researchers. Yet rejection rates continue to rise as journals tighten quality controls and enforce stricter editorial standards. According to academic editors and peer reviewers, most rejected manuscripts fail for predictable reasons that are often avoidable.

A closer look at these rejections shows that the problem is rarely bad luck. It is usually weak research design, unclear contribution, or poor compliance with journal expectations.

Lack of Novelty Tops the List

Editors consistently cite lack of novelty as the leading cause of rejection. SCOPUS journals prioritise studies that add something new to existing knowledge. Manuscripts that merely replicate earlier studies without fresh insight struggle to justify publication.

For example, repeating a standard survey on student learning outcomes without introducing a new context, population, or analytical approach is unlikely to survive editorial screening.

Originality Goes Beyond Rewording

Closely related to novelty is originality. Journals expect authors to think independently, not simply repackage existing ideas. Papers that summarise known theories without applying them creatively or extending them are often rejected at the desk review stage.

Originality may come from a new conceptual framework, a novel application of theory, or a reinterpretation of existing findings within a different context.

Methodological Weakness Raises Red Flags

Even strong ideas collapse under weak methodology. Reviewers scrutinise research design, sampling, data collection, and analysis. Any mismatch between research questions and methods raises immediate concerns.

Common problems include unjustified sample sizes, inappropriate use of descriptive statistics where inferential analysis is required, and vague explanations of procedures. Journals expect methodological choices to be clearly defended and aligned with the study’s objectives.

Poor Citation Undermines Credibility

Failure to engage with relevant, credible, and current literature signals weak scholarship. Editors note that many manuscripts ignore seminal works or rely heavily on outdated sources.

Incorrect referencing style, missing citations, and inconsistent formatting also lead to desk rejection. In competitive journals, such errors suggest carelessness and reduce confidence in the study’s rigour.

Unethical Use of Artificial Intelligence

The rise of AI tools has introduced new editorial concerns. Journals increasingly screen submissions for unethical AI use. Blindly copying AI-generated text, fabricating references, or using AI to generate data violates publication ethics.

Editors emphasise that AI may assist with language refinement, but responsibility for accuracy, originality, and integrity remains with the author.

Language and Writing Quality Matter

Clear academic writing is not optional. Poor grammar, unclear arguments, and weak paragraph structure make manuscripts difficult to review. Even sound research can be rejected if reviewers struggle to follow the argument.

Long, unfocused sentences and poorly connected sections reduce impact and readability, particularly in international journals with diverse audiences.

Submitting Outside the Journal’s Scope

Scope mismatch is one of the fastest routes to rejection. Each SCOPUS journal has a defined disciplinary focus. Submitting an education study to a medical or engineering journal almost guarantees desk rejection, regardless of quality.

Formatting Errors Still Matter

Many authors underestimate the importance of formatting. Missing figure captions, inconsistent headings, incorrect reference style, and failure to follow word limits are common technical reasons for rejection.
