The University of Ghana re-appoints Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo for a second term as Vice-Chancellor, recognizing her exceptional leadership and transformative impact on the University.


 

The University of Ghana (UG) has announced the re-appointment of Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo as Vice-Chancellor for a second term, starting in October 2025. The decision, made unanimously by the University’s Governing Council on December 19, 2024, recognizes Professor Amfo’s exceptional leadership and significant contributions during her first four years in office.

The re-appointment follows a rigorous process, with a Search Party appointed by the Council in October 2024, as per the University’s Statutes (Section 13 (3) and (26)). The University emphasized that the re-appointment process adhered to a transparent and fair evaluation to assess Professor Amfo’s performance and accomplishments.

 

 Key Achievements during Professor Amfo’s First Term:

 

Professor Amfo’s leadership has been transformative for the University of Ghana, with notable achievements that include:

  • Modernization of classrooms across the University’s campuses.
  • Implementation of the One-Student-One-Laptop (1S1L) initiative, ensuring that students have access to modern technology.
  • Creation of hotspot comfort zones for enhanced student engagement.
  • Establishment of the Centre for Disability Studies and Advocacy (CEDSA) to promote inclusivity.
  • Introduction of Gender and Internship Policies to improve student support systems.
  • Resolution of the University’s debt burden, particularly stemming from previous litigation.

Additionally, Professor Amfo led the Legon Leadership Academy, which aims to enrich academic life while fostering diversity and inclusivity.

Her tenure also saw advancements in research management, digital transformation, and community engagement, ensuring that the University of Ghana remains a leader in education and societal impact.

 

 Global Recognition and Achievements:

Under Professor Amfo’s leadership, the University of Ghana has continued to shine on the global stage. It has maintained its position as the top-ranked tertiary institution in Ghana, excelling in key areas such as education quality, research impact, and societal contributions.

This success is reflected in its strong performances in the Webometrics Rankings (2022), the AD Scientific Index (2022), the Global 2000 List by CWUR (2023), and the Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings (2024).

Moreover, Professor Amfo played a pivotal role in developing the University’s Strategic Plan for 2024-2029, which focuses on achieving global impact through innovative research, teaching and learning, and a technology-driven, people-centred approach. The plan outlines five key strategic priorities, known as the 5-4-5 blueprint:

Professor Amfo’s contributions to academia have been widely recognized. She has received numerous accolades, including the Legacy and Gadia State Award (2023) and the Ghana Woman of the Year for Excellence in Education Award from Glitz Africa (2023). She was also honored with the GUBA Nana Yaa Asantewaa Woman of Enlightenment Award in 2021.
