  The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has announced the passing of Prof. Emeritus Daniel Mireku-Gyimah, its Foundation Vice-Chancellor and the first Mining Professor in West Africa.  

UMaT Announces the Passing of Its Foundation Vice-Chancellor

 The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has announced with profound sorrow the death of Prof. Emeritus Daniel Mireku-Gyimah, the institution’s Foundation Vice-Chancellor and celebrated as the first Mining Professor in West Africa. 

A Distinguished Legacy

 Prof. Mireku-Gyimah was not only a pioneering academic but also a visionary leader whose contributions shaped the establishment and growth of UMaT. He played a critical role in positioning the University as a hub for mining education and research in Ghana and across Africa. His pioneering work in mining engineering earned him recognition as a cornerstone in advancing mining education and practice, while his leadership laid the foundation for UMaT’s current global reputation. 

Tributes and Condolences

 In its official statement, UMaT described Prof. Mireku-Gyimah as a “distinguished scholar, visionary leader, and a cornerstone in the establishment and development of the University.” The University extended its deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, friends, and the wider UMaT community, affirming that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of scholars and professional 

National and Academic Contributions

 Beyond UMaT, Prof. Mireku-Gyimah made immense contributions to national development through mining research, academic publications, and advisory roles in Ghana’s mineral sector. His work bridged academia and industry, influencing policy, safety standards, and sustainable mining practices.
