Students of Tamale Technical University (TaTU) on September 16, 2025, embarked on a demonstration on campus to protest what they described as the authorities’ failure to address their concerns.

Their grievances included high increases in school fees, challenges with the student portal, poor maintenance of infrastructure and the non-release of funds by management to the SRC for projects.

During the protest, students expressed frustration and called for the removal of the school’s director of finance. Some chanted: “Enough is enough,” and “The director of finance must go.” Police officers arrived at the scene after reports of tyres being set on fire and clashes erupting.

Some students were injured in the process. Eyewitnesses said officers were seen assaulting and brutalising students during the chaos. The Ghana National Union of Technical Students (GNUTS) has since condemned the assault, demanding an independent investigation and prosecution of officers involved.

It also called on the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, to urgently intervene to address the students’ concerns. GNUTS warned that failure to meet their demands could trigger nationwide action, insisting that the right to peaceful demonstration is non-negotiable.
