Sandema SHTS closed down following students riot

Sandema Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in the Builsa North District of the Upper East Region has been closed down temporarily following the student’s riot that claimed a life of one male student.

One female student also collapsed during the riot and she is currently receiving treatment at the Sandema Government District Hospital.

The male student, whose name was only mentioned to Radio Ghana as Nashiru, reportedly was hit in the chest by one of the stray bullets of warning shots of a police team dispatched to restore calm when the unrest broke out around 11:30pm on Wednesday.

Nasiru is suspect to have died from bullet wounds at a district hospital in Sandema.

The Builsa North District Assembly has since held an emergency District Security Council, DISEC, meeting aimed at resolving the matter.

The chaos started when after some members of the school’s cadet corps ordered their colleague students to go to bed.

The turmoil saw the clashing students hurl stones, chase one another with machetes and wreak havoc on school property by setting vehicles and buildings on fire.

Speaking to our Upper East Regional GBC’s Correspondent Samuel Ayammah, the Builsa North District Chief Executive, David Amoabil Afoko, said the school has been closed down for two weeks to allow authorities find a lasting solution to the matter.

He revealed that a committee has been put in place to investigate what actual caused the riot.

Mr. Amoabil Afoko disclosed that the committee are expected to come out with their findings within three weeks.

Family members of the deceased have since been informed.

Late Nasiru who is a Muslim will be buried today according to the teachings of the Islamic Religion.

Calm has since returned to the school. Security personnel have been stationed at vantage points to protect lives and property.
