The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the appointment of Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis as its new Director-General, taking over from Dr. Eric Nkansah. Prof. Davis brings a wealth of academic expertise and leadership experience, promising a transformative era for education in Ghana.
Who Is Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis?
Prof. Davis’ journey is one of perseverance, academic excellence, and a passion for education. Below is an outline of his remarkable achievements:
Early Life and Education
- Began formal education at Self-Reliance Kindergarten in 1976.
- Continued at Presbyterian Primary School, Abowinmu (1978) and later to Aboom A.M.E. Zion School (1981) in Cape Coast.
- Attended Experimental JHS, Bakatsir, completing in 1987.
- Entered Mfantsipim School in 1987, earning his “O” and “A” Level certificates in 1991 and 1993, respectively.
Higher Education and Career Milestones
- Pursued a B.Ed (Mathematics) at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), graduating in 1999.
- Worked as a Senior Research Assistant in the Department of Science and Mathematics Education in 2000.
- Transferred to UCC’s Institute of Education in 2002 and earned a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) scholarship to study in Japan.
- Completed an MA in Mathematics Education at Hiroshima University, Japan (2000-2004).
- Awarded two Australian government scholarships to pursue a PhD in Mathematics Education at Monash University, Melbourne, completing in December 2010.
- Rose through academic ranks to become Professor of Mathematics Education in 2018.
Professional Contributions and Impact
- Supervised 11 PhD and 25 MPhil theses, contributing to academic growth.
- Published over 50 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals, including Sage Open.
- Led the team that developed the new B.Ed national curriculum for teacher preparation in 2018.
