Ferdinand EducationGhana |  April 25| President Mahama Orders Immediate Promotion of All Eligible Deputy Directors of Education

President John Dramani Mahama directed the immediate promotion of all eligible deputy directors of education in Ghana, regardless of office space, ending GNAT’s promotion dispute and boosting staff morale.

Bottlenecks Removed to Accelerate Career Progression in GES

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education to grant immediate promotions to all eligible deputy education directors nationwide, even without physical office space.

The announcement was made by Education Minister Hon. Haruna Iddrisu at the launch of a free sanitary-pad distribution campaign in Accra, underscoring the administration’s commitment to educational equity and staff welfare.

Background: GNAT Strike Threat

The directive responds in part to mounting pressure from the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), which had threatened industrial action by April 30 over delayed promotions and systemic stagnation among lower-ranked educators. GNAT warned that continued inaction would disrupt the academic calendar and impede service delivery in schools.

“One of your major concerns, the president raised to me, is that many deputy directors of education struggle to move up the ladder because of the unavailability of office spaces,” Minister Iddrisu said.

“Rather than allowing infrastructure bottlenecks to hinder career progression, President Mahama’s directive cuts through the red tape.”

“Even Without Office, You Will Serve”

Minister Iddrisu emphasised that office infrastructure should no longer delay well-deserved promotions.

“President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to give all those deputy directors a legitimate promotion. And even without office, they will still serve in their capacities as directors of GES,” he declared.

This bold move effectively removes one of the final barriers preventing deputy directors from advancing to substantive director roles, ensuring that rank and responsibility align with pay and benefits.

Significance for Ghana’s Education Sector

  • Morale Boost: Immediate promotions will recognise the dedication and expertise of senior education professionals, improving morale across the service.
  • Retention and Performance: By honouring promotion commitments, the government aims to retain experienced administrators and stimulate higher performance.
  • Equity and Fairness: The directive addresses long-standing inequities in career progression caused by non-merit factors such as office availability.

Next Steps and Implementation

The GES has been instructed to process all eligible promotion cases without delay. Human resource records will be updated to reflect new ranks and associated remuneration, and arrears, if any will be paid in the upcoming payroll cycle.

Schools, district offices, and regional GES administrations have been notified to prepare for the seamless integration of newly promoted directors into their roles, even if permanent office accommodation is still pending.
