The National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) 2024 semi-finals delivered an unforgettable contest that had spectators dubbing it “the finals before the finals.” Mfantsipim School, Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon), and Osei Tutu SHS clashed in a fierce showdown, culminating in a tiebreaker that saw Mfantsipim edge out PRESEC in a heart-stopping moment.
From the first round, Mfantsipim took an early lead with 23 points, followed closely by PRESEC with 21 points, while Osei Tutu trailed with 12. The stakes escalated in the second round as Mfantsipim stretched their lead, only to be matched by PRESEC’s relentless pursuit. The third round saw each team score a perfect 10 points, but in the fourth, PRESEC surged to 53 points, briefly overtaking Mfantsipim’s 50 points.
Just as PRESEC seemed poised for victory, the Botwe Boys fought back, tying the score at 53 and forcing a dramatic tiebreaker. Silence filled the auditorium as Mfantsipim’s Peter Thompson buzzed in with the correct answer, securing their place in the finals and dashing PRESEC’s hopes for a ninth trophy.
Osei Tutu, though ultimately finishing with 27 points, earned admiration for their determination. Mfantsipim’s triumph has reignited their quest for the prestigious NSMQ title—a testament to their resilience and skill.
