The National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA) has introduced a New Standard-Based Curriculum for Basic Schools in Ghana.

The first phase of the Curriculum is at its implementation stage and is from Kindergarten to Basic 6.

The New Curriculum has come with changes in ways of doing things, ranging from names to activities.

Below are some of the Changes;

First, the term Syllabus has been changed to Curriculum. The Curriculum contains instructions, methods and contents to be taught in the classroom.

It is used by the teacher (facilitator) as a guiding material during classroom instruction.

Second is the term,’ Strands which refers to ‘Sections‘,’Units‘ or ‘Aspects‘ to be taught in class.

In Languages, such as English and Ghanaian Language, the term relates to ‘ASPECTS’ , that is, Oral Language (Listening and Speaking ) etc. In contrast, in other subjects such as Science, the term relates to ‘SECTIONS/UNITS”.

The Third terminology that has changed is ‘TOPICS’ which is now referred to as ‘SUB-STRANDS’

In addition, ‘GENERAL OBJECTIVES’ are now known as ‘CONTENT STANDARDS’ with ‘SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES’ known as ‘CONTENT INDICATORS’.

Teaching and Learning Activities are now known as ‘EXEMPLARS’ with RELEVANT PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE(RPK) now known as ‘LEARNERS’ ENTRY BEHAVIOR’

Other changes include ‘CIRCUIT SUPERVISORS‘ now referred to as ‘SCHOOL INSPECTION OFFICERS’, responsible for inspecting and monitoring the work of teachers in all schools.

The Introduction of a Lesson is now referred to as the ‘STARTER’

SchoolBased INSET (SBI) is now known as Professional Learning Community

1. Cluster-based Inset now Professional Learning. Community
2. Teachers are now Facilitators
3. Students/Pupils now Learners

4. Teachers Guide now Teacher Resource Pack.
5. Scheme of work  now Scheme of Learning

6. Lesson Plan now  Learning Plan.
7. Teaching and Learning Materials now Teaching and Learning Resources
