NPP’s Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, reaffirms government’s promise to rename UPSA after its founder, Nana Opoku Ampomah, during a campaign visit in the Bekwai Constituency.

In a gesture of honor and legacy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reassured Ghanaians of the government’s commitment to renaming the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) after its esteemed founder, Nana Opoku Ampomah.

During a recent courtesy call on Nana Opoku Ampomah, who also serves as the Chief of Amoafo in the Bekwai Constituency of the Ashanti Region, Dr. Opoku Prempeh underscored the importance of recognizing individuals who have significantly contributed to the country’s educational landscape. This meeting was part of his ongoing campaign tour across the constituency, where he emphasized the government’s plans to honor Nana Ampomah’s legacy by renaming UPSA in his honor.

Nana Opoku Ampomah, the visionary behind the establishment of UPSA, is widely respected for his pioneering efforts in professional education in Ghana. His contribution has been instrumental in shaping the future of business and professional education, not only in the country but also across the West African sub-region. The institution, which began as a private tutorial college in 1965, has since evolved into a leading public university, offering various undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, who is also Ghana’s former Minister of Energy, reiterated that this renaming initiative is part of the broader vision to celebrate and immortalize those who have made significant impacts on Ghana’s development, especially in education. “Nana Opoku Ampomah’s legacy deserves to be celebrated and remembered. Renaming the University of Professional Studies after him will ensure that his invaluable contributions to education continue to inspire future generations,” Dr. Opoku Prempeh said.

The Chief of Amoafo, Nana Opoku Ampomah, expressed his gratitude for the government’s consideration and pledged his support for the initiatives aimed at enhancing education in the country.

As part of his campaign tour, Dr. Opoku Prempeh also engaged with various community members in the Bekwai Constituency, addressing issues concerning education, infrastructure, and the NPP’s vision for Ghana’s future. He reiterated the party’s commitment to continuing the development agenda initiated by President Nana Akufo-Addo, particularly in the area of education, where significant strides have been made in the past few years.

The renaming of UPSA is expected to take place in the near future, solidifying Nana Opoku Ampomah’s enduring legacy in Ghana’s education sector.

UPSA has grown to become one of Ghana’s most respected academic institutions, with a focus on training professionals in accounting, finance, and management, among others. The university’s transformation from a tutorial college to a top-tier public university is a testament to Nana Opoku Ampomah’s foresight and commitment to professional education in Ghana.

The initiative to rename UPSA after Nana Opoku Ampomah has been met with widespread debate and agitations from alumni, educationists, and the general public, as it reflects a significant milestone in the recognition of individuals whose vision has transformed Ghana’s educational landscape but also seen as a political propaganda by the Vice Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, popularly referred to as NAPO.

This commitment from Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh and the NPP government further demonstrates their dedication to preserving Ghana’s educational history while propelling the sector towards future growth and success.
